Album Review: Attention:Deficit

Wow where do I start?? I been following and supporting Wale for a couple years now, it’s unfortunate that I can’t say I was there supporting his music from the beginning but when I was introduce to his music by a DMV* belle, XOXO Hadi, one day at my apt at school it was something I connected with instantly. There was something special and unique about his wordplay and delivery that had me captivated. He had me questioning in my head like “Who is this guy? He is actually nice, who is he signed to? Is he really from DC??“ Uptown Roamers was actually the first track I heard I and even though I had never visit the DMV* area to know what areas he was talking about I just like how well the song was put together. As much as I didn’t want to tell XOXO Hadi who had introduced me to Wale’s music I became an instant fan.

I was exposed to Wale again when I attended Jordan Brand All American Game at MSG and Wale performed “Nike Boots” the sound system was bad so all we could hear was the hook. I went back to school and clowned Wale to XOXO Hadi. I definitely went on to YouTube and listen to the track and was thrown away by how creative this dude was with his words. I later told my boys like “Yo that Nike Boots track is nice bra!!” Laughter later followed but I was dead serious but sometimes you can’t beat something over the head of your friends sometimes so I fell back but kept listening to Wale. Fast forward a little bit to the first mixtape I downloaded “Mixtape about Nothing” certified classic mixtape, with that under my belt I went full promotion telling everybody that I could about Wale. Some of my friends responded with “Who Dat??” and then there was some who said “Oh yeah I heard of him he from DC, Nike Boots guy.” I remember introducing W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E. to my little brother and that was when he began to take Wale serious.

Who would of thought it would be the same little brother who had the vision to notice that Wale was in Penn Station and was about to walk right past us. I told my brother “Yo dude looks just like Wale!! [Points finger at Wale]” My brother responds “Nigga that is Wale…Wale!!!” Wale turns and looks, “Oh shit that’s really him.” By this time I became a real big fan already so I didn’t know what to say. We walk up to Wale and shakes hand with him. My brother says to Wale”Im a fan of your music, keep working hard bra.” I remember posting it “Easter Update” post of that whole event on here.

Then fast forward to my roommate Mike V finding tickets for a Wale show in the city. I went with the roommates to his show. Great show got my first look at J Cole at this show. I got a dollar bill signed by Wale this helped me get over not taking a picture with him at Penn Station. Then I got the Back to the Feature mixtape and that was another great mixtape, so as avid fan I had to go back and get every mixtape that he ever released [All quality mixtapes if I may say]. I take a trip to the DMV area to visit XOXO Hadi with my little brother and we go to this club with my brother Club Fur I think and come to find out Wale is set to perform there too. Wale goes and performs and these chicks start fighting and I really applaud security they got both of them girls out of there fast as hell. Talk about sweating out weave!!! Then came performances at the VMA’s, BET Awards and other public appearances where I would receive texts from the Nwosu twins just to brag about their Naija superstar. They had good reason too because of extreme progress Wale was making throughout the industry. Till this day I laugh when I get a text from them pertaining Wale. That was my only thing that I could confess that was great that came out of DMV, even though they have talented R&B artists. But back to this album review, you see how I catch ADD myself lol.

Now the album drops Attention: Deficit, and it’s such a surreal feeling that the artist I was promoting to everybody I could finally made it and his album is out. Though it got undershipped to most Targets and Best Buy, I get my hands on a copy so now it’s time. I believe in Wale enough that I know he will always spit some heat on tracks. After hearing the album I must say he made a great album. It’s so much diversity on this album you got your hard tracks “Triumph”, “Mirrors” and “TV in the Radio”. Then you have your club songs “Chillin” and “Pretty Girls”, melodic feel good tracks “World Tour”, “Mama Told Me”, “Beautiful Bliss”; murky and gloomy tracks “Contemplate”, “90201”, and “Diary”; and last but not least African music inspired track “My Sweetie” which contains a sample from Let Me Love You by Bunnie Mack. This album requires close listening to fully understand the words surgeon of an artist that you have with Wale. The metaphors are impressive but he can also depict stories for you, like in “90201” he talks about a female who is bulimic, addicted to cocaine, and chasing a dream of being a celebrity. Then you have “Diary” who about a girl who is just too hurt to love Wale back, while Wale is trying to show her his eternal love to her. Also have to note the amazing spoken word towards the end of the track. Another nice tale that I found most really relate to is “Shades” where he raps about Wale growing up being alienated because he was Nigerian and not being accepted by his African American peers in school. One of my brother’s favorite track because he grew up being the dark, always ashy-peasie-head little kid, while I was the brown skin older brother with the nice hair lol. Another aspect of the album is the soulful feel it breathes off.

With features from Chrisette Michelle, Jazmine Sullivan, Melanie Fiona, and Marsha Ambrosius that is an amazing soulful lineup. I adore each and every one of them and they all provided great features to Attention: Deficit. Then you have pleasant features from Pharell, J Cole, K’Naan, Bun-B, Weensey from Backyard Band, and Gucci Mane. I really have to note that J Cole bodied Beautiful Bliss, K’Naan surprised me with his feature on TV in the Radio, I heard of his music but he definitely impressed me with his wordplay “I’m Somalia so that just mean I’m trying to eat bread/ F*ck with my people well that’s call the Heath Ledge”. Gucci was a nice addition to Pretty Girls and he did sound comfortable on the go-go inspired production. With all that said in a place where real Hip Hop is in a recession Wale brings us our 16 track stimulus package. Like he says in “Prescription”: “They itching for a new breath well here’s the calamine/ and I refuse to camouflage with other guys.” I couldn’t put it any better than that.

Blame my homegirl Ebi for pushing me to make this post, I hope you find this post intriguing and please go out and support Wale and get the album, it was really under shipped by his management but it should be in stores by now don’t let the first week numbers(he sold 28k) discourage you. It’s really a great album.

*DMV- It’s a term used to describe the DC metro area. DMV stands for DC, Maryland, Virginia.

BET Cyphers: Best Part of the BET Awards

The one above was by far my favorite one but that was a classic one. Watching the ciphers from this year's Ciphers i got to say Nikki Minaj held her shit down. She flamed everybody but Joe Buddens, he clearly cleaned up that whole cipher. I know you caught the Hov shot he threw at the end. "Im a student of the game, not a teacher's pet!!" I would love for these two to battle real talk. Most would say Hov would thrash Buddens but i think they both would have equal research to flame each other. But back to Nikki Minaj she was showing me signs of Lil Wayne with her delivery but that comes from being in the studio with Weezy prolly. "Mac n Cheese 6, fried chicken the guts/ and im killing these b*tchs Mike Vick it up" Thats tough right there She got mad bars but the Mike Vick bars was tough and the crowd went crazy lol.

I respect all 3 emcee's but Eminem cleaned this cypher up real good. Black thought came in 2nd and Mos 3rd. I really cant rock with Mos Def something is either wrong wit me or something is not clicking wit me and Mos Def. I still respect him and his work. Umi Say is my shit hahah. Em said"When I bring the drama, use to bomb you like Sadam/ but now that imma a lil calmer/ Im a f*ckin cross from Osama, Dahmer, Obama, Dalai lama/" Thats tough right there.

What's Playing in the iPod: K'Jon

This song "On the Ocean "is so uplifting. I thought it was Charlie Wilson singing the whole time. It gives off such an old school vibe to me. I think the VH-1 Soul Cities Show w/ Nelson George embedded the old school vibe in my mind. Soul Cities make you want to drop everything you doing and go to whatever city they featuring. i didn't know much about K'jon, but I did my research and he is a Detroit native singer/songwriter. He has worked with superstars like Ludacris, Ginuwine, Ne-Yo, T-Pain, and super-producers Cool & Dre and others. Look out for him. he got a hit with this track.

What's Playing in the iPod: Mr Hudson

I got his Straight No Chaser album and its nice(Fab Voice)!!! Mr Hudson was featured on Hov album, on Young Forever. His album is filled with great songs. This track is called Supernova. If you like this then try "Time" and "There Will Be Tears" both are real nice music. Check those out and tell me what you think

Guess Who Is Back

Its H-Town...Yeah the fellas that may have been the reason you were conceived. Yeah the fellas who brought you the Classic Knockin the Boots track, they are back and they are knockin your heels off with this track. They lost their lead singer Dino who was killed in a car accident back in 2003. They had been planning a comeback before but the death of Dino put those plans on pause. Well now they bring us this track featuring Jodeci. Had this track dropped back in the late 90's it may have cause a stir. This may be received well from the more mature crowd. I like the track tho even with all the negativity coming from the Jodeci camp. I seen them K-Ci and Jojo live at the Apollo and it was prolly the most comical performance I have ever seen live.

Loso's Way in Stores Go Get Yourself a COPY

This is a good album and if you like Loso then imma tell you he didnt dissappoint with this album either. It was kind of sad to see that his album leaked like a good 2 weeks before it was suppose to be in stores but the only way to see if it hurts Loso is by his number sales. I expect this album sell due to the bangin singles he got out. We got to go out and support Real Hip Hop everybody.

Jadakiss Album is HERE!!!

I found my riding track for the summer too. Its featuring Mary J Blige and it dope. Whenever these two hookup they make great music. Another Track that is a must hear is the "What if" Track featuring Nas. I don't want to give away any details of the track so just click it if you haven't heard it yet.

Mother Nature Playing Games!!

Yesterday really felt like summer. This song came to my mind when i was driving around the neighborhood. I don't know why but this song is the BOMB DIGGITY. Mr Cheeks had some heat rock in his chamber with the Lost Boyz. Now on to Mother Nature why does she keep playing games??? I went to work the other day and right before i went into the building it starting snowing. Then after work i come out and its sunny. Like is she serious?? Man its April and she still tryna throw snow on us. Like come on, i really can't wait until the summer.

Sidebar: we definitely lost in the championship in that basketball league. we played good but we couldn't pull out the W. Its all good though.

Album Review: Love vs Money

Love vs Young Money... Oops you see Nivea what you done made me do!! LOL Im sorry but I couldn't hold that one back. I was on my way to work and I finally got away from the Drake So Far Gone Mixtape and decided to listen to The Dream Album and I must "LAAWWWDDD this Child is talented!!!" Its a very good sophmore album to say the least. I know you all heard the singles he got out so i wont even comment on those but I think everybody already knows what happens when Rockin That Thang comes on in the clubs or even on the radio. lol My Favorite track on there is "Kelly's 12 Play", some other tracks that are really good is "Love vs Money"(Is it me or was that song influence on the whole Nivea-Wayne situation) the lyrics were powerful and I could feel dude's pain on losing his everything to an "alien"!!(That Rhyme too!!) Another Certified Banger is "Put It Down" that track go hard. OOoo"Fancy" is a smooth track too. "Sweat it Out" is a R. Kelly type track too. The ladies are gonna love this album even though, most females find The Dream unattractive.(What?? Im keeping it G) Regardless if The Dream keep pumping out good music he gone be good with the ladies. Not trying to compare The Dream to R Kelly but Kelly went thru mad shit and I think regardless of all that if Bump N Grind come on the ladies go crazy!!!!!

UPDATE**: Two more tracks that I really can't leave off this review is "Right Side of My Brain" and "Mr Yeah". Ooo in the beginning of Right Side.. the voice saying Dooo Goo Doo is sooo tough, that track is a problem.

Pray VI Reign???

I really don't know if im copping this album, the Na Na Na track was not hot to me. The Hook was catchy but Jimmy first single of his albums usually speak volumes on the whole project. For example, On My Way To Church had singles like: Certified Gangstas and Crunk Musik; Harlem: Diary of a Summer(My Fav. Capo Album) had singles like Baby Girl, Summer With Miami, and What You Been Drinkin On; Hustler's P.O.M.E. had singles like We Fly High, and Emotionless. Get my point??? Compare Na NA NA NA track to any of those singles, they don't compare. Ever since the Max B rift, Capo has not been raising the bar anymore, it makes you wonder if Max was really writing for Capo. Because Max B music is way better than Capo's right now in the rap game. SO i ask anybody who cop the album to hit me and tell me how it is.

Sidebar: I can't believe he put Pop Champagne on the album, its clearly Ron Brows's track. lol

Album Review: Intuition

Jamie Foxx know what he was doing putting this album together. I was really looking for more of Unpredictable but this album was definitely not that. He flooded the album with all the big names thats doing it big in 2008, from artist to producers. My hands down james brown tracks are: "Freak'in Me ft Marsha Ambrosius (from Floetry), "Blame It" ft T-Pain, "I Don't Know", "Weekend Lover", "Slow", "Overdose" and "Love Brings Change". I like that he got a share of club bangers "Blame It", "Number One", and "I Don't Know". Overall the album is very solid and its a very radio friendly album as well. Go out and cop it!!!

Album Review: A Different Me

The album dropped on Dec 16th and in its first week of sales, she sold about 322,000, which makes her best first week sale. Keyshia Cole went out and got my boy Nas on the album, i was like Wow, i really couldn't see them colaborating but the track was aight "Oh-Oh, Yeah-Yeah". "Trust","You Complete Me", "Brand New"and "This is Us" are the best songs on the album hands down like 6:30!! I can really play them all day, i feel like Keyshia was singing to me on all of them. Monica did her thang on the "Trust" track. Some other favs on the album that you should check out is "Make Me Over",, "No Other", , and "Where This Love Could End Up". Overall the album is good music and its a good look by Keyshia because she dares to be different because on the first two albums you could really feel the pain that she was going through, but we all know with all the bumps and roadblocks that life throws at you, theres always light at the end of the tunnel. Pretty much this album is Keyshia's bringing us on the ride and showing us that she getting closer to that light.

Sidebar:"Play Ya Cards Right" is a nice track but it really weird that its 2008 and Tupac is still featuring on people tracks. LOL I know ya remember when they said he was alive and was living in Cuba. Ha Ha Ha!!!
